Scholarships Help Build Our Workforce

AkH&LA is committed to hiring local within the state’s hospitality industry, and that means helping students get the education and preparation they need to join Alaska’s workforce! AkH&LA provides scholarships to deserving individuals who intend to pursue post-high school course of study at either college/university or other post-secondary educational institutions. Scholarships are funded by voluntary donations from AkH&LA members.

High School

To take advantage of the high school scholarship opportunities, please review the information below and submit your application by May 15.

  3. Refer to application process below for a list of the supporting documents required. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

NOTE:  Scholarship funds will be awarded to the student upon evidence of registration in an accredited post-secondary institution.


    1. Applicant must be an Alaskan resident of at least two years duration prior to applying for the scholarship.
  1. Applicant must be accepted for admission to an accredited university or post-secondary vocational school.
  1. Applicant must plan to pursue a career in the Alaska hospitality industry.

Application Process:

Applicant must submit the following items:

  • Complete application form.
  • Letter of application addressed to the Education Committee. The letter should contain a brief explanation of career goals.
  • Three letters of recommendations from choice of high school teachers, administrators, counselors, employers, or individual with significant knowledge of applicant’s experience and involvement.
  • An official and recent high school/college transcript with cumulative grade point average and a class standing/rank.
  • Personal Essay. In your essay, please answer this question on the enclosed essay form: What do you consider to be the single most important societal problem? Why? Word count should be between 250 to 300 words.

Professional Development Scholarships

If you work at a hotel property and want to advance your career by growing your industry knowledge or skill set, AH&LEF’s Professional Development Scholarships provide assistance for distance learning courses and professional certification. If you are a hotel employee currently enrolled in either of these programs through the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute, then you are eligible to apply for a scholarship. Application deadlines are quarterly: January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1.
